Three Signs There Is Something Wrong With The Braking System In Your Car

When driving a car, having properly functioning brakes is very important. It can be hard to know when there is an issue with the braking system of your car if you do not have a lot of experience with cars though. The guide below walks you through a few signs that there may be something wrong with one or more elements of the braking system in your car.

Brakes Squeal

If you notice that it sounds like your car is squealing when you go to stop, there is a good chance that your brake pads need to be replaced. The brake pads make that squealing sound when they are worn down and the brake mechanism pushes against them. Having a mechanic replace the pads should take care of the problem right away.

ABS Light Is Lit

If you turn on your car and notice that the ABS light is lit, something may be wrong with the ABS system in your car. There are many different things that could be the cause of the lit light, such as a brake line leak, a sensor malfunction, or simply your vehicle may be low on brake fluid. There is a basin under the hood of your car that holds the brake fluid. Look at it and check to see if the level of fluid is below the fill line dramatically. If it is, add brake fluid to the basin. If the light does not turn off, a mechanic may need to look at the car more closely.

Brake Pushes to the Floor

If you depress your brake and it easily goes all the way down to the floor and barely causes the vehicle to stop, one of your brake lines may be broken. The car will still stop slowly if one of the lines is in good working order, as long as you are not going very fast. You cannot drive a vehicle with a broken brake line for every long though because it could be very dangerous.

If you have noticed any of these issues while driving, something is more than likely wrong with your braking system. Take your car to a mechanic as soon as possible to have them inspect the car for any issues. The mechanic will let you know what issues he or she found before doing any repairs so that you can decide if you want to have the repair made right away or not.
